Two Niger Delta University Students Die in Bayelsa Truck–Tricycle Collision
A fatal crash on the Yenagoa–Amassoma Road in Bayelsa State has claimed the lives of two students from Niger Delta University, Amassoma, and left several others critically injured. The accident occurred on Wednesday when a speeding truck collided head-on with a commercial tricycle at a bend in the road.
According to residents, the crash was caused by excessive speed and the absence of road signs along the notoriously dangerous stretch. Witnesses said the truck was negotiating the bend at high speed when the driver lost control and rammed into the tricycle, crushing it completely.
The impact left the tricycle mangled beyond recognition. Passersby and residents quickly rushed to the scene, pulling survivors from the wreckage and taking them to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa. The bodies of the deceased were later moved to a nearby mortuary.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter traffic enforcement. Locals are urging the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Bayelsa State Police Command to step up patrols, install speed breakers, and carry out regular safety checks on heavy vehicles. Mrs. Ebike Ekain, another resident, warned that without urgent intervention, more lives would be lost.
The Yenagoa–Amassoma Road has gained a reputation as one of Bayelsa’s deadliest routes due to frequent crashes. The reconstruction of the section between Etegwe Roundabout and Tombia Community introduced several sharp turns, but many drivers reportedly ignore the risks and maintain dangerous speeds. The FRSC maintains an ambulance on standby in the Tombia area or at the Agudama–Ekpetiama Roundabout to respond to such emergencies.
Police spokesperson DSP Musa Muhammad confirmed the incident, noting that investigations were underway to determine the precise cause of the accident. “Yes, an accident happened there and we are investigating the causes,” he said.
