Nigerian Political Parties Gear Up Amid Internal Rifts and Coalition Talks

Nigeria’s political scene is heating up ahead of the 2027 elections, with major parties navigating internal disputes, leadership moves, and coalition strategies.

Within the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Bola Tinubu appears on track for an uncontested bid for a second term. However, behind the scenes, there are rumblings over unity and the choice of a running mate, highlighting the party’s need to strengthen internal cohesion.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is still reeling from divisions sparked by its 2023 presidential primaries. Long-standing disputes over North–South zoning and lingering factionalism continue to weaken the party’s ability to present a united electoral front.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is actively repositioning itself as a reform-driven, national transformation movement. The party has scrapped the rule requiring a minimum membership period before contesting for leadership roles, rolled out a Digital Political Academy to boost civic education and leadership skills, and is exploring a merger with the People’s Redemption Party (PRP). It has also launched a National Handshake initiative aimed at fostering reconciliation and unity across the country.

The Labour Party (LP), though less visible in recent developments, remains a notable player in the evolving multi-party landscape and is said to be making preparations behind the scenes.

Beyond party politics, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has urged political actors to steer clear of divisive ethnic rhetoric, particularly the North–South fault line, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned against early campaigning ahead of 2027.
