The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has issued a strong charge to the Chairmen of the 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Imo on the judicious and transparent use of funds allocated for grassroots development. This call came during the official opening of a three-day retreat aimed at equipping elected LGA officials with the necessary tools for effective local government administration.
Governor Uzodinma emphasized that Local Governments, often described as the “first arm closer to the people,” play a critical role in bringing balanced development to rural communities. He urged the council chairmen to see their positions not as an end, but as a means to deliver tangible results that align with the democratic mandate granted by their constituents.
He stressed the importance of public servants engaging regularly in capacity-building and training to enhance their administrative capabilities and better serve the electorate. According to the Governor, a clear and vision-driven roadmap is essential for achieving meaningful and sustainable development goals.
“A number of officials assume office without a clear template or vision for performance, often seeing election as the ultimate goal rather than a responsibility to add value. This approach results in offices being vacated without leaving behind any significant legacy,” Uzodinma noted.
He called on the Council Chairmen to involve key stakeholders in decision-making processes and to ensure policies are executed in a transparent and participatory manner. He also warned against absenteeism, making it clear that any elected official not residing in their constituency risks having their office declared vacant according to constitutional provisions.
Further, Uzodinma reminded the council leaders that their leadership should demonstrate open, accountable governance that showcases the benefits of democracy to the grassroots. This includes ensuring public funds are appropriated solely for public good, leaving no room for mismanagement.
Traditional rulers and presidents of town unions were also encouraged to rigorously monitor council officials’ activities, highlighting that residents’ feedback will be seriously taken to ensure accountability.
The Governor’s directive underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening local governance, improving service delivery, and fostering inclusive development throughout Imo State.
