The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible bye-election in the Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025. This assurance comes as the commission finalizes preparations to replace the late Honorable Isa Yaro, who passed away in May 2024.

Speaking from Dutse, the Public Enlightenment Officer for INEC in Jigawa, Kamal Hassan, confirmed that all necessary election materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, have been delivered to their respective locations within the constituency. Sensitive election materials were personally handed over by senior INEC officials in the presence of security agents to ensure their security and proper handling.

Hassan highlighted that INEC has engaged extensively with key stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and community leaders, to foster a peaceful and transparent electoral environment. These collaborative efforts aim to educate the electorate and encourage a high voter turnout while minimizing incidents of violence or election malpractice.

The commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Mahammad Lawan, stressed the importance of a collaborative effort between INEC and security bodies to guarantee smooth election proceedings. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Army, have pledged thorough support to maintain peace and protect lives and properties during the polls.

As the state prepares to head to the polls, political interest in the bye-election is intense, with major parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fielding strong candidates—Rabi’u Mukhtar and Rabiu Auwalu Manzo, respectively.

INEC urges the electorate to exercise their voting rights responsibly, ensuring that the new representative for the Babura/Garki Federal Constituency reflects the collective will of the people. With all preparations accounted for, the commission remains optimistic about delivering a credible electoral process that will reinforce democratic values in Jigawa State.
