A fatal road accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving one person dead and five others injured.

The crash involved a Lexus SUV, reportedly speeding, which veered off course and collided with two tricycles (“keke”) along the People’s Club/Limca Road. The incident happened just ahead of the Anambra South Senatorial and Onitsha North House of Assembly by-elections.

According to eyewitness accounts, the SUV — initially suspected to belong to security operatives — lost control and rammed into the tricycles. Following the accident, the occupants of the vehicle abandoned both the SUV and their rifles at the scene before fleeing, allegedly to avoid being lynched by angry residents.

Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the casualty figure and disclosed that the vehicle has been recovered. Investigations so far show that the car is not linked to any security agency in the state. The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a thorough probe to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

Emergency teams quickly arrived at the site, secured the area, and rushed the injured victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down the driver and other suspects involved.

Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers as investigations continue. The tragic incident also serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving, particularly during sensitive times such as election periods.
