The Lagos State Government has taken strict action by sealing several residential homes and public facilities in Lekki for illegally discharging untreated sewage into public drainage systems, a move aimed at protecting public health and the environment.
The enforcement exercise was conducted by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) following numerous complaints about environmental pollution and health risks posed by untreated wastewater being released into drains. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that properties, including Patience Diekola Court and Brickle Apartment 4 in Lekki, were shut down for these violations.
Investigations revealed that some property managers chose to illegally channel raw sewage into stormwater drains rather than using licensed sewage desludging services. In the case of Brickle Apartment 4, the management also obstructed government officials during routine inspections, further compounding their offences.
Wahab emphasized that such environmental pollution poses serious threats to public health and that the government would not tolerate any breaches of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017. He warned that violators would face stringent sanctions.
Residents in the state are urged to engage only accredited sewage desludging companies and adhere to proper wastewater management practices to safeguard hygiene and environmental sustainability.
This decisive action by Lagos authorities demonstrates the state’s commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all Lagosians, reinforcing zero tolerance for environmental neglect and pollution.
