President Bola Tinubu has approved N16.7 billion for the urgent reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which was severely damaged by flooding earlier this year. The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a coordination meeting with the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi.
The Mokwa Bridge, a critical 10-span structure, serves as a major transportation artery for Niger State and neighboring regions, facilitating the movement of people and goods. Its closure due to flood damage had significantly disrupted economic activities and posed major logistical challenges.
Idris highlighted the administration’s swift response to the infrastructural emergency, crediting the President’s approval as a vital step towards restoring connectivity and boosting regional commerce. The reconstruction project includes full restoration and reinforcement of the bridge to withstand future adverse weather events.
The rebuilding effort forms part of a wider commitment by the Tinubu administration to improve Nigeria’s aging infrastructure and enhance resilience in key economic zones, particularly in the transport sector. The Federal Government has been actively reviewing multiple infrastructure projects, negotiating costs, and ensuring efficient use of public funds to fast-track completion.
This allocation not only underscores the administration’s prioritization of infrastructure rehabilitation but is also expected to bring relief to communities and businesses that rely heavily on this vital corridor.
Stakeholders remain optimistic that the reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge will stimulate economic growth, restore normalcy to daily trade activities, and improve the overall quality of life in Niger State and surrounding areas.
