The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reinforced its political strength across Nigeria by achieving a sweeping victory in the recent legislative by-elections held across 16 federal and state constituencies in 12 states. Emerging victorious in 12 of these contesting seats, the APC’s performance underscores its growing dominance ahead of the pivotal 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared the APC winners in several key states including Ogun, Kaduna, Niger, Jigawa, and Taraba, among others. In Ogun State, the APC candidate Adesola Ayoola Elegbeji triumphed decisively in the Ikenne, Sagamu, and Remo North Federal Constituency by-election, securing over 41,000 votes to dominate rivals from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC). Similarly, in Kaduna State, APC clinched all three vacant seats in various constituencies, further cementing its control in northern Nigeria.
Other notable wins included Mathew Dogara Daje’s victory in Niger State’s Munya Constituency and Rabiu Mukhtar’s success in Jigawa State. These results have been warmly celebrated by President Tinubu’s administration, which views the outcomes as a clear endorsement of its policies and leadership.
On the other hand, opposition parties reacted strongly to the election results. The Labour Party (LP) decried the elections as a “mockery of democracy,” while the PDP dismissed the exercise as fraudulent and challenged the fairness of the conduct. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) also voiced allegations of intimidation and corruption. Despite these protests, INEC commended the peaceful conduct of the elections, highlighting the collaborative efforts of security agencies to maintain order during the polls.
In Kano State, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) managed to hold one constituency, highlighting pockets of resistance against the APC wave. The APC’s sweeping victories, however, signal a major consolidation of political power and an apparent strengthening of the ruling party’s grip on Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
As the country looks ahead to the 2027 elections, these by-election results will likely serve as a barometer of political sentiments and confidence in the ruling party’s governance. Whether the opposition can regroup and challenge APC’s dominance remains a critical question for Nigeria’s democratic trajectory.
