A fresh wave of violence struck communities in Benue State, as armed assailants killed a mother, her son, and two other individuals in coordinated attacks. The tragic incidents occurred on Wednesday in the Egwuma and Ogbai communities within Agatu Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the victims were working on their farms when the suspected armed herders launched their assault. The mother and her son were reportedly killed at Egwuma community, while the other two victims lost their lives at nearby Ogbai community. At the time of reporting, two additional persons were missing, with ongoing search efforts to locate them.
The chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin James, condemned the attacks as senseless and barbaric, lamenting the loss of innocent lives amid farming activities. He highlighted challenges such as poor road conditions which hinder rapid security response, noting that security personnel were on patrol in other parts of the area when the attacks took place.
This attack adds to the numerous violent incidents linked to armed herders in the Benue region, a conflict that has persisted for years, causing deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of residents. Local authorities continue to call for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further escalation.
The authorities have yet to release official updates on arrests or further security operations following this incident. The tragic loss of life underscores the urgent need for lasting solutions to the security challenges plaguing Benue State.
