A heartbreaking motor accident occurred on Wednesday at Nwanwu Junction in the Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resulting in the deaths of three people and leaving several others critically injured. The tragedy unfolded when a concrete mixer truck, reportedly experiencing brake failure, veered off the road and crashed into roadside shops and passersby.
Eyewitnesses say the truck, owned by a construction company, lost control while descending Offia Oku Amachi Road from Nwezenyi. The driver attempted to avoid colliding with a motorcycle but failed to maintain control, causing the large vehicle to swerve off the roadway with devastating consequences. The impact destroyed shops belonging to local business owners, including DJ Ogobest and two food vendors, while causing significant damage to nearby properties.
The Executive Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area, Honorable Ebere Nwogba, expressed profound sadness over the incident, describing it as a massive loss to the community. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured in the crash. Nwogba reassured residents that the authorities are conducting thorough investigations to determine the precise cause of the accident and pledged to take all necessary steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The accident’s casualties include three confirmed fatalities, whose remains have been deposited in the morgue, and four individuals who are currently receiving medical care for their injuries. The local government chairman urged motorists and pedestrians alike to exercise extreme caution, obey traffic regulations, and avoid speeding, especially in busy or populated areas.
This incident adds to a worrying pattern of road accidents in the state and highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures. Residents and officials alike hope that the lessons from this tragedy will lead to enhanced awareness and stricter enforcement to safeguard lives on Ebonyi’s roads.
