The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially presented Certificates of Return to seven winners of the National Assembly bye-elections conducted on August 16, 2025. The handover ceremony took place at INEC’s Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
National Commissioners of the Commission presented the Certificates of Return to the newly elected senators and members-elect of the House of Representatives, who will represent various constituencies across Nigeria. Among the recipients were Mr. Nwachukwu Emmanuel Chibuzor of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator-elect for Anambra South, and Ikpea Joseph Igiagbe, Senator-elect for Edo Central under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Also presented were certificates to five House of Representatives members-elect, including Omosede Igbinedion (APC) from Ovia Southwest Federal Constituency in Edo State and Mukhtar Rabiu Garki (APC) from Babura/Garki Federal Constituency in Jigawa State. Others included Fidelix Bagudu (APC) for Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Adesola Ayoola-Elegbeji (APC) for Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North in Ogun State, and Fola Oyekunle (PDP) for Ibadan North Federal Constituency in Oyo State.
Certificates for winners of State Constituency bye-elections will be presented by Resident Electoral Commissioners at state INEC offices across the country on Friday, August 22, 2025. These constituencies include Ganye in Adamawa State, Onitsha North 1 in Anambra State, and several others in Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Niger, and Taraba states.
The only constituency left unresolved at the time was Kaura Namoda South State Constituency in Zamfara State, where voting was disrupted by violence. INEC scheduled supplementary elections for the affected polling units on August 21, 2025.
The bye-elections saw victories for APC in 12 constituencies, APGA in two, while PDP and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) each secured one seat. The elections have been met with mixed reactions, including allegations of voter intimidation and electoral malpractice in some areas.
