Former Nigerian diplomat and political analyst, Akinyemi, has cautioned that the Global South, including Nigeria, should not allow itself to be drawn into the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict as pawns in superpower rivalries. Speaking at a recent forum on international relations, he stressed that strategic neutrality and careful diplomacy are essential to protect national interests and avoid unnecessary entanglements.
Akinyemi highlighted that the Russia-Ukraine war has far-reaching consequences beyond Europe, affecting global trade, energy prices, and food security—issues that disproportionately impact developing nations. He warned that aligning too closely with any side could expose Nigeria to political and economic pressures, undermining the country’s sovereignty and international standing.
According to him, Nigeria and other Global South countries must prioritize diplomacy, multilateral engagement, and regional cooperation to safeguard their interests. He also urged policymakers to focus on domestic resilience, including strengthening local economies and infrastructure, so that the nation is not vulnerable to external shocks from distant conflicts.
Analysts note that Akinyemi’s intervention underscores the delicate balance countries in Africa and the Global South must maintain amid global tensions. His advice reflects a growing call for strategic autonomy, encouraging Nigeria to navigate international crises with prudence while promoting peace and stability on the continent.
