A faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned that President Bola Tinubu could face political risks in 2027 if he decides to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima on the party’s ticket. According to the group, dropping Shettima might alienate a significant portion of Northern Muslim voters who were instrumental in APC’s 2023 electoral success.

The forum stressed that Shettima’s presence on the ticket had helped bridge regional and religious divides, particularly in the North-East and North-West. They argued that any attempt to alter this balance could weaken Tinubu’s support base, at a time when opposition parties are working to exploit perceived cracks within the ruling party.

Party loyalists further pointed out that beyond political calculations, Shettima has played a stabilizing role in governance. His continued partnership with Tinubu, they believe, signals unity and consistency in leadership, both of which are crucial for navigating Nigeria’s current socio-economic challenges.

With the next general election still two years away, the debate highlights early maneuverings within the APC and the importance of alliances in retaining voter confidence. Analysts suggest that the issue underscores how sensitive regional and religious representation remains in Nigeria’s politics.
