The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has clarified his earlier statement on self-defence, insisting that he did not call on Nigerians to bear arms. Speaking at a media briefing, the military chief explained that his comments were misinterpreted and taken out of context, stressing that the Armed Forces remain fully committed to protecting citizens and maintaining national security.

General Musa emphasized that while citizens should remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, the responsibility for defending the nation rests squarely with trained personnel, not civilians. He noted that encouraging ordinary Nigerians to carry arms would create more security challenges and undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace across the country.

The CDS reiterated that the military has intensified operations against banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities, assuring the public that recent gains in security operations would soon translate into greater safety in affected communities. He also called for patience and unity, urging Nigerians to resist panic or fear driven by misrepresentations of his earlier remarks.

Analysts say the clarification was necessary to dispel anxiety among citizens, as widespread circulation of the earlier statement had sparked debates on vigilantism and the risk of worsening insecurity. Security experts note that Musa’s reaffirmation underscores the military’s stance that only properly trained and authorized forces should bear arms in defence of the country.
