The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the resumption of cargo revenue collection at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after a 15-year break. The move marks a major step in the agency’s efforts to boost internally generated revenue and tighten oversight in the aviation sector.

According to FAAN officials, the suspension of cargo revenue collection in previous years was linked to policy and operational bottlenecks that hindered effective monitoring and accountability. With the new system now in place, the authority says it has put in improved mechanisms to ensure transparency, efficiency, and compliance in cargo handling and related charges.

The resumption is expected to significantly increase FAAN’s revenue base, enabling it to reinvest in critical airport infrastructure, enhance security, and improve service delivery for stakeholders in the aviation industry. Stakeholders believe the decision will also encourage greater accountability and competitiveness in Nigeria’s air cargo operations, which play a vital role in trade and logistics.

Industry analysts note that restarting this revenue stream after such a long hiatus reflects FAAN’s renewed focus on financial discipline and sustainability. They also stress that with Lagos airport being the country’s busiest aviation hub, the impact of this move will be felt across Nigeria’s logistics and trade sectors.
