Bologna have been dealt a major setback ahead of their Serie A campaign as new signing Ciro Immobile has been ruled out for at least eight weeks after sustaining a thigh injury in training.

The 34-year-old striker, who joined Bologna this summer after a long and successful spell with Lazio, had been expected to lead the attack and provide much-needed experience to Thiago Motta’s side. However, medical tests confirmed a muscular tear in his left thigh, sidelining him until late October.

Club doctors have placed the Italian international on a strict recovery program, with Bologna stating that his progress will be monitored weekly. The news comes as a huge disappointment for both the player and fans, who had hoped to see the veteran forward make an immediate impact in Bologna’s push for European qualification this season.

Immobile, a former European Golden Shoe winner, has scored over 200 goals in Serie A and was seen as a marquee addition to the squad. Without him, Motta may have to rely more heavily on young talents like Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Orsolini to carry the team’s attacking threat.

The injury also puts Immobile’s chances of an Italy recall in doubt, with Luciano Spalletti set to announce his squad for the next round of international fixtures in September.
