The Federal Government has announced the closure of 22 illegal tertiary institutions operating across the country. The institutions, which were discovered by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other regulatory agencies, were said to be running without proper accreditation or government approval.

According to officials, the affected schools include unregistered universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education that have been awarding degrees and certificates illegally. The government warned that such institutions not only undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s education system but also exploit unsuspecting students and parents.

The Minister of Education, through a statement, stressed that government remains committed to sanitising the higher education sector. He added that security agencies have been directed to investigate and prosecute operators of the illegal schools, while students affected have been advised to seek transfer to accredited institutions.

The crackdown comes amid rising concerns over the proliferation of mushroom tertiary institutions across the country. Experts say the move is necessary to protect the quality of education, restore public confidence in Nigerian certificates, and ensure graduates are properly trained for the labour market.
