In a sharp rebuttal to criticisms leveled by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Lagos State chapter of the APC has issued a forceful statement, dismissing the claim that President Tinubu is as incompetent as his predecessor and accusing Obasanjo of hypocrisy and political bitterness.

Obasanjo, in his latest memoir, described Tinubu’s administration as “competing with Buhari in incompetence.” This comment did not sit well with the Lagos APC, whose spokesperson responded that such remarks are laughable and do not deserve serious attention. The party was quick to retort that it is ironic for a leader whose own administration was marred by arrogance and democratic setbacks to question the competence of others.

Rather than see Tinubu’s bold moves—such as removing fuel subsidies, revamping the foreign exchange regime, and tackling inefficiencies—as signs of incompetence, the party frames them as courageous and necessary reforms that his predecessors, including Obasanjo himself, failed to initiate. In the eyes of the Lagos APC, those aren’t missteps—they are deliberate steps toward economic renewal.

The response goes further: the Lagos APC accuses Obasanjo of harboring deep-seated resentment toward governments he no longer influences. They remind Nigerians of his tenure’s failures—from unchecked corruption and financial scandals to debt mismanagement and the destabilizing attempt to amend the constitution for a third term.

The statement closes by urging Obasanjo, now a figure expected to offer sage counsel, to choose silence over divisive commentary. Instead of blade-wielding public statements, he should contribute constructively—or better yet, refrain from commentary altogether.

This reply underscores the growing political posture of the APC in Lagos: one of unwavering confidence in President Tinubu’s reform direction and an unwillingness to take criticism from past regimes at face value.
