The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, in a move party leaders describe as a step towards equity, justice, and national balance.

The decision was reached after a high-level meeting of the PDP zoning committee, which reviewed the political landscape, party traditions, and Nigeria’s power-sharing dynamics. According to insiders, the committee unanimously agreed that the South should produce the party’s next presidential candidate, following years of dominance by northern contenders.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, confirmed that the party’s leadership will soon begin consultations with stakeholders across the three geopolitical zones in the South — Southeast, South-South, and Southwest — to identify a candidate with broad national appeal.

“The PDP is committed to fairness and inclusion. By zoning the presidency to the South, we are not only respecting the principle of rotation but also listening to the yearnings of millions of Nigerians who desire balanced leadership,” Ologunagba stated.

Political analysts believe the move could boost the party’s chances in 2027, especially in southern states where agitation for power rotation has been growing. However, the decision may spark tension in the North, where some stakeholders had expected an open contest.

The PDP has now set the stage for an intense battle among southern heavyweights, with potential aspirants from the Southeast, South-South, and Southwest already being mentioned in political circles.
