Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the rising spate of killings across Nigeria, warning that the country is fast descending into a state of war.

Obi, in a statement on Sunday, said the frequency and scale of violent attacks in different parts of the country have left communities devastated and families in perpetual mourning. He lamented that the government’s response to the worsening insecurity has been inadequate, leaving citizens to live in fear of kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists.

“The blood of innocent Nigerians is being shed daily. From the North to the South, we are witnessing avoidable killings that have turned our nation into a killing field. Nigeria is bleeding like a country at war, and urgent steps must be taken to stop this tragedy,” Obi said.

He urged the Federal Government to demonstrate stronger political will in tackling insecurity, while also calling on security agencies to be more proactive and intelligence-driven in their operations. According to him, beyond deploying force, the root causes of insecurity—such as unemployment, poverty, and lack of education—must also be addressed.

Obi further stressed the importance of national unity, urging political leaders to put aside partisan interests and work together to save the country from collapse. “This is not the time for blame games or politics as usual; it is time to rescue Nigeria from the brink,” he added.

Many Nigerians have echoed his sentiments, with growing calls for urgent reforms in security architecture and more support for victims of violence who have been displaced from their communities.
