The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide clarity on the recently introduced “extraordinary registration” exercise in the Southwest region.
According to the party, the move by INEC has raised concerns among political stakeholders, particularly regarding fairness, transparency, and equal access to voter registration opportunities across all regions of the country.
The ADC leadership explained that while every Nigerian citizen of voting age must be encouraged and given the opportunity to obtain a Permanent Voter Card (PVC), any exercise perceived to favor one geopolitical zone over another could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
The party urged INEC to clearly define the scope, guidelines, and rationale behind the extraordinary registration in the Southwest, stressing that Nigerians deserve to know why such a measure was deemed necessary and whether similar arrangements will be extended to other regions.
Furthermore, the ADC called on civil society organizations, election observers, and the media to closely monitor the development to ensure that electoral reforms promote inclusivity and transparency rather than suspicion or distrust.
The statement reaffirmed that for democracy to thrive in Nigeria, every citizen must not only have the right to vote but must also trust that the process leading up to elections is credible and impartial.
