The Federal Government has denied claims that it recently signed any agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This clarification comes amidst renewed tension between the union and the government following speculations that a fresh pact had been reached regarding demands for improved welfare, funding for universities, and implementation of past agreements.

Speaking on the matter, the Minister of Education emphasized that while discussions and consultations are ongoing with ASUU to address lingering issues, no new agreement has been officially signed. He urged the public to disregard misinformation that could further heighten unrest within the academic community.

Background of the Dispute

ASUU has long pressed for increased budgetary allocation to education, payment of withheld salaries, and improved working conditions for lecturers. The union also insists on the implementation of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and Memoranda of Action (MoA) previously entered with the government.

The union’s leadership, however, recently claimed progress in negotiations, sparking public speculation that a deal had been sealed. The FG’s denial is seen as an attempt to set the record straight and manage expectations.

Students and Parents Express Concern

As the back-and-forth continues, students and parents have expressed fears of another prolonged industrial action. For many, the uncertainty surrounding ASUU negotiations has become a recurring threat to academic stability in public universities across Nigeria.

Government Reassures Nigerians

The Education Ministry maintained that it remains committed to dialogue and constructive engagement with ASUU, assuring that the federal government will fulfill its obligations without jeopardizing the stability of the academic calendar.

Observers believe the outcome of the ongoing consultations will determine whether ASUU resorts to another strike or continues its engagement with government officials.
