As Nigeria enters the critical “ember months” — the end-of-year stretch known for increased traffic and festive travel — the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern appeal to drivers nationwide to exercise heightened caution.

FRSC officials have cautioned against excessive speeding and reckless driving, reminding motorists that while speed may feel exhilarating, it’s often deadly. Drivers are urged to observe posted speed limits and obey road signs to prevent avoidable accidents.

The agency also discouraged night travel unless absolutely necessary due to the higher risk of crashes when visibility is poor. Wrongful overtaking, overloading, and other dangerous maneuvers should be avoided, as they significantly increase the likelihood of fatal collisions.

A major focus of the warnings includes the dangers of drunk and impaired driving. Motorists are repeatedly reminded that alcohol near the wheel drastically reduces judgment and reaction time — a combination that frequently results in tragedy.

To reinforce these safety messages, the FRSC plans to intensify its efforts with robust patrol operations, public education campaigns, and more active roadside engagement. These initiatives aim not just to enforce rules, but to foster safer attitudes and behaviours among drivers.
