Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, has forcefully rejected former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s allegations that the federal government pays ransom to bandits. Ribadu emphasized that such claims are false and completely disconnected from reality.

He stated that the government has, without paying a dime, successfully rescued numerous kidnapped victims through military operations and the dedication of security forces. These efforts, grounded in strong counterterrorism and community engagement strategies, have led to significant gains in restoring security to volatile areas, particularly in Kaduna State.

Ribadu appealed to Nigerians—especially families of kidnap victims—to stop paying ransoms, warning that such actions only empower criminals and worsen the problem. He highlighted that ransom payments fuel the criminal economy, allowing bandits to upgrade their operations and escalate their attacks.

He also commended the bravery and sacrifices of Nigeria’s security personnel, noting that they have neutralized high-profile bandits and dismantled terror networks operating across affected regions.

Finally, the NSA urged political actors to refrain from politicizing national security matters, calling on them to prioritize unity and cooperation in the shared fight against banditry and terror.
