Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi over their dismissal of the recent Rivers State local government elections as unlawful.

Wike argued that the polls were conducted entirely within legal parameters and that no court has ever ruled them invalid. He reminded his critics—but especially Atiku—that emergency regulations giving presidents extraordinary powers in certain situations date back as far as 2004, implying that Atiku should be aware of such provisions if he’d been collaborating effectively with his former boss at the time.

Turning to Peter Obi, Wike suggested that Obi’s moral high ground is weakened by precedent: as former governor of Anambra State, Obi himself held local government elections toward the end of his tenure, rendering his criticisms hypocritical in Wike’s view.

Through his remarks, Wike sought not only to dispel claims of illegality but also to reframe the political narrative—framing his critics as uninformed or self-serving rather than objective observers.
