A gathering of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has issued a series of assertive demands concerning party restructuring ahead of the national convention. At a meeting in Abuja under the banner of “Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders,” these figures reaffirmed that the National Chairmanship role must remain zoned to the North-Central region, following the arrangement set in the 2021 convention.
The group also called for fresh congresses in specific states—namely Ebonyi and Anambra in the South-East—as well as fresh exercises for local government positions in Ekiti. Their demand comes amid ongoing court rulings that have either invalidated prior outcomes or ordered repeat polls in those regions, prompting the leaders to insist these legal directives be respected for the sake of procedural fairness.
Samuel Ortom, the former Governor of Benue State, emphasized the need for inclusivity and respect for judicial rulings, maintaining that the PDP’s credibility hinges on adherence to its founding principles. “Unity cannot be achieved through exclusion or disregarding valid court rulings,” he declared, further warning that ignoring these demands could render any planned national convention invalid.
Wike’s allies—among them key figures like the PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, ex-governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Ayo Fayose, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and House Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda—stressed that leadership positions must remain competitive and open, yet sensitive to regional balance. They urged the National Working Committee to take immediate action to organize inclusive congresses and ensure equitable zoning in alignment with PDP traditions.
With tensions brewing between rival PDP factions—each pulling for different positions and power bases—the resolution of these demands will likely shape the party’s structure and unity as it heads toward the national convention. The cohesion and just conduct of this process, they argue, will determine the PDP’s relevance and strength as an opposition force moving forward.
