The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced impressive figures from the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, confirming a massive wave of interest from Nigerians eager to participate in future elections. In just two weeks since the exercise kicked off, over 2.5 million citizens have completed their online pre-registration, while more than 72,000 individuals have already turned up at physical centres for in-person registration.
According to INEC officials, the gender breakdown shows near balance, with men making up 48% of the online pre-registrants and women accounting for 52%. More striking, however, is the strong representation of young Nigerians—those between the ages of 18 and 34—who form about 63% of total registrants. This group, which also includes a significant number of students, is emerging as the driving force of the new voter surge.
For the in-person registrations that commenced last week, a similar balance is evident. Data indicates that men constitute 49.29% of those who registered physically, while women make up 50.71%. This, INEC says, reflects an encouraging trend toward inclusiveness and greater civic engagement across all demographics.
Observers note that these early results point to a renewed sense of civic duty, particularly among young people who have been vocal about their desire for a more accountable and representative government. The surge also highlights the success of digital platforms in making voter registration more accessible and convenient for citizens nationwide.
INEC expressed optimism that the turnout will continue to grow as awareness deepens and more centres open to accommodate prospective voters. Officials emphasized that the commission remains committed to ensuring transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity throughout the CVR process.
With months still left in the registration window, the figures are expected to climb significantly, setting the stage for a historic voter base ahead of the next general elections. The message from the numbers is clear: Nigerians, especially the youth, are ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
