The United States Government has announced a donation of $32.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support food and nutrition assistance for internally displaced persons in Nigeria. This funding aims to provide vital aid to 764,205 vulnerable individuals affected by ongoing conflict in the Northeast and Northwest regions of the country.

The assistance package includes general food distributions and specialized nutritional support, including complementary top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as 43,235 children receiving aid through electronic food vouchers. The focus on vulnerable groups highlights the critical need to address malnutrition and food insecurity in conflict-affected areas.

The WFP plays a crucial role in delivering emergency food relief and building long-term food security in more than 120 countries. The donation from the U.S., one of the largest supporters of the WFP, helps sustain operations amid funding challenges that have threatened to suspend aid for millions earlier this year.

This contribution comes at a critical time, as Nigeria faces an unprecedented hunger crisis exacerbated by violence, displacement, and economic instability. The humanitarian support aims not only to save lives but also to help communities rebuild and develop resilience against future shocks.
