Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fully implement electronic voting and transmission of results ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Speaking at an interactive session in Owerri on September 5, 2025, El-Rufai stated there is no longer any valid excuse for INEC to rely on manual methods that have historically undermined the credibility of elections.
El-Rufai, a prominent advocate for election reforms, highlighted how electronic voting technologies can reduce fraud, enhance transparency, and speed up the announcement of results. He called on political stakeholders and citizens to support INEC’s efforts to modernize the electoral process to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections.
The former governor warned that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy hangs in the balance, emphasizing the crucial role that accurate and secure electoral systems will play in restoring public confidence and promoting political stability ahead of the 2027 polls.
El-Rufai also stressed the importance of nationwide voter education, urging young Nigerians and all eligible voters to participate actively in the upcoming Continuous Voter Registration exercise as a foundation for electoral success.
