South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that defender Nyiko Mobbie will miss the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria due to a serious injury sustained in their recent 3-0 win against Lesotho. Mobbie, a key figure in the defense, suffered a fractured eye socket in three places following a clash of heads early in the game and was forced off after just five minutes.

In response to the injury setback, Broos has called up Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabiso Monyane to replace Mobbie for the upcoming home clash with the Super Eagles. Monyane’s impressive performances for the Chiefs this season, where he has helped keep five clean sheets in five league matches, make him a trusted choice for the defensive role.

Broos expressed confidence in his squad despite the loss, stating, “We have a list of players, and the one who will come in tomorrow will be someone for whom we have confidence.” He emphasized that injuries are part of football but reassured fans that the team remains motivated and poised to maintain their top position in Group C.

The Bafana Bafana currently lead the group with 16 points, nine ahead of Nigeria, and a victory in their next encounter could seal their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The injury to Mobbie is a significant blow to South Africa’s defensive setup. Still, Broos’ tactical acumen and the depth of the squad provide hope as South Africa prepares to host Nigeria at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
