Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed satisfaction with the team’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. Chelle praised the team’s dominance in possession and tactical discipline that led to the narrow but crucial win, reigniting Nigeria’s hopes in Group C.

Speaking after the match on September 5, 2025, Chelle said the victory has boosted the squad’s ambition ahead of their upcoming and even more challenging clash against South Africa. “We are happy because we got three points with a 1-0 win. Now, we can go to South Africa with many ambitions,” he remarked.

The coach acknowledged the defensive resilience shown by his team, which controlled 70% of the ball in the first half and wore down a tiring Rwandan side. He also expressed concern over star striker Victor Osimhen’s injury during the game, noting that further scans are needed.

As Nigeria prepares to face Group C leaders South Africa in Bloemfontein, Chelle emphasized that the team would be happy to secure a 1-0 win on South African soil, recognizing the difficulty of overcoming a strong home side.

The victory against Rwanda moves Nigeria to third place in the group, trailing South Africa by six points with a few matches remaining, keeping alive the slim but crucial hope of qualifying directly for the 2026 World Cup.
