Super Eagles star striker Victor Osimhen has been confirmed unfit to participate in Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against South Africa, scheduled for September 10, 2025, at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. Osimhen sustained an injury during the first half of Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo, which has now forced him out of the crucial away game.

The 26-year-old Galatasaray forward was substituted early due to discomfort caused by a bruised chin. According to team medical officials and head coach Eric Chelle, Osimhen woke up on the morning following the Rwanda match with increased pain in the injury area, ruling him out of the trip to South Africa. He is expected to return to Turkey for further treatment.

Coach Chelle confirmed that the team doctor assessed Osimhen’s condition before departure and deemed him unfit to travel, highlighting the safety and long-term well-being of the player as a priority.

Osimhen’s absence represents a significant blow to Nigeria’s attacking options against a strong Bafana Bafana side, but the Super Eagles remain focused on the task ahead, with other forwards ready to step up in the striker’s absence.
