Veteran journalist and politician Dele Momodu has advised opposition parties on how to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 Nigerian presidential election. Momodu argued that President Tinubu has effectively “locked down” the South, making it nearly impossible for a southern presidential candidate to compete effectively against him. Therefore, Momodu suggested that the opposition should zone the presidency to a Muslim candidate from the North and the vice presidency to a Christian from the South to create a strategic balance that can counter Tinubu’s dominance.

Speaking in a recent interview, Momodu emphasized that this approach is practical in the current political climate, especially given Tinubu’s substantial financial resources and control over state structures. He dismissed the presidential ambitions of southern politicians like Peter Obi and Goodluck Jonathan as unlikely to succeed against Tinubu’s influence in the South.

Momodu’s advice reignited debates around ethnic zoning in Nigerian politics. The Lagos State chapter of Tinubu’s APC rejected Momodu’s suggestion, calling it outdated and affirming that the Nigerian electorate now prioritizes performance and competence over ethnicity. The APC urged the opposition to focus on policy rather than identity politics, maintaining full confidence in Tinubu’s re-election bid.
