Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that the South-East region should exercise patience and wait until after 2027 to vie for Nigeria’s presidency. Speaking in Abuja, Umahi emphasized that President Bola Tinubu, who hails from the South-West, still has a full eight-year tenure to complete, and this period is meant to serve all Nigerians, both from the South and North.
Umahi referred to a pre-2023 agreement among 17 Southern governors that the presidency should shift to the South, a resolution leading to Tinubu’s victory. He argued against the narrative pushing the South-East as having an automatic right to the presidency now, stating that Tinubu’s administration represents the entire South.
Further, Umahi noted that the South-East and North-East regions, which have never produced a president before, would have an opportunity after 2031. He acknowledged past marginalization of the South-East but highlighted ongoing developmental projects funded under Tinubu’s government as a demonstration of goodwill.
The minister called on the South-East to focus on unity and development rather than rushing political ambitions, stressing the importance of political fairness and rotation based on equity.
