Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has pledged to reopen the local government councils across the state and restore their full operational status. The announcement comes after the activities of the local governments in Osun were paralyzed since February 17, 2025, due to a fierce political power tussle between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at a reception organized by the PDP leadership in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke likened the forces opposing his administration to the Biblical Pharaoh, emphasizing that his administration is under pressure because of its achievements and transformational agenda. He assured party members and the people of Osun that the government would reclaim the local governments and resume their activities promptly.
“We will get our local governments back and running. They want to hold Osun down. They are shocked with our delivery and transformation of Osun; they want to keep Osun from developing,” the governor said. He called on the people not to allow a return to what he described as “bad governance” and stressed the importance of sustaining good governance to continue the progress in Osun.
Local government elections were held on February 22, 2025, with the PDP insisting that the elected chairmen and councilors from these polls have the legitimate mandate to govern. However, the APC challenges this, citing a February 10 Court of Appeal ruling in Akure that reinstated officials elected in October 2022, who were earlier removed by a Federal High Court ruling.
Governor Adeleke’s administration has urged party members and residents to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to prepare for the 2026 governorship elections and ensure the continuity of development across Osun State.
The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and the Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi, also expressed support for the governor’s resolve and encouraged continued public engagement for the state’s progress.
