The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Sokoto State, Umar Garba, has issued a stern warning against the act of multiple voter registrations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during his maiden interaction with journalists at the INEC state headquarters in Sokoto, Garba emphasized that multiple registrations violate the Electoral Act and will attract prosecution.

The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which began with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, targets new registrants, voters who have relocated and wish to transfer their registration, and people replacing lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). Physical registration is scheduled to commence from August 25, 2025, across all 23 local government areas, the INEC state headquarters, and other designated centers from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday.

To ensure accuracy, inclusiveness, and integrity in the voter register, INEC will deploy the Voter Enrollment Device alongside the Automatic Biometric Identification System (ABIS). These technologies are designed to detect and prevent multiple registrations effectively.

Garba appealed to the media, civil society groups, traditional and religious leaders to support sensitization efforts and ensure peaceful conduct throughout the exercise. He also assured citizens that security agencies are collaborating with INEC to guarantee a safe environment for both registrants and staff.

Citizens were urged to report any obstruction, extortion, or irregularities at registration centers promptly. The REC reminded residents that their Permanent Voter Card represents their voice in the democratic process and that a clean and inclusive voters’ register is essential for free, fair, and credible elections.
