President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has intensified efforts to win the support of the Southeast ahead of the 2027 general elections. The president, who has faced criticism over his perceived weak political base in the region, is said to be engaging political leaders, traditional rulers, and interest groups in fresh consultations.

According to sources within the presidency, Tinubu is urging stakeholders in the zone to “give his administration a fair chance” by aligning with his government’s reforms, which he argues will yield long-term economic and political benefits.

The Southeast has historically leaned towards opposition parties, particularly the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and, more recently, the Labour Party (LP). However, Tinubu’s strategists believe that building bridges with influential leaders and addressing the region’s concerns on infrastructure, security, and political inclusion could shift loyalties ahead of the polls.

Analysts say the renewed lobbying underscores the ruling party’s recognition of the Southeast as a crucial bloc in 2027, especially as opposition forces continue to push for unity across geopolitical zones.

While reactions among Southeastern political leaders remain mixed, some have welcomed the outreach as a sign of recognition, while others insist that genuine inclusion and development, not political promises, will determine the region’s stance.
