The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has raised serious concerns over the conduct of recent by-elections across the country, alleging widespread violence, intimidation of voters, and rampant vote buying.
In a statement released after their meeting, the governors condemned what they described as a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democratic process. They argued that the credibility of elections is being eroded by the actions of political actors who deploy thugs, state-backed coercion, and financial inducements to influence outcomes.
The forum noted that such practices not only disenfranchise ordinary citizens but also damage the integrity of the electoral system and weaken public trust in democratic institutions. The governors urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to take stronger measures to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the future.
They further called on Nigerians to resist vote buying, stressing that selling votes mortgages the country’s future. According to them, democracy can only thrive when citizens are allowed to exercise their franchise without fear or undue influence.
The PDP governors also restated their commitment to working together as a bloc to defend democracy, protect the rights of voters, and provide credible leadership alternatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.
