The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
Damagum, who has been serving in an acting capacity since the suspension of former chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, was ratified during the party’s 102nd NEC meeting held in Abuja. The decision, according to party leaders, was taken to ensure stability and continuity in the PDP’s leadership structure as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his acceptance remarks, Damagum pledged to reposition the PDP as the true opposition voice in Nigeria and to unite all party members across the country. He assured stakeholders that the party would not be distracted by internal disputes but would focus on mobilizing Nigerians against what it described as the failings of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The PDP remains the hope of Nigerians. We will work to strengthen internal democracy, promote inclusiveness, and ensure that the voices of our members are heard at every level,” Damagum stated.
Party chieftains at the meeting described the ratification as a move that will help the PDP consolidate its structures nationwide while preparing for upcoming by-elections and, ultimately, the 2027 polls.
