The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded sharply to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the latter’s call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend his foreign engagements and declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara states due to escalating security concerns.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC accused the ADC of exploiting the tragic events in the North West for political gain. Morka described the ADC’s remarks as “insensitive” and “opportunistic,” emphasizing that such statements undermine the gravity of the situation and the efforts of the government to address the security challenges.
The ADC’s call came in the wake of a recent attack in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, where over 30 worshippers were killed in a mosque. Additionally, reports indicated that earlier this month, 144 people were kidnapped, 24 killed, and 16 injured across several local government areas in Zamfara State.
While the ADC has criticized the government’s response, the APC defended President Tinubu’s foreign trips, arguing that they are essential for attracting foreign investments and strengthening international partnerships. The party highlighted recent joint operations with neighboring countries, such as the capture of key terrorist leaders, as evidence of the benefits of international cooperation.
The APC also pointed out that the ADC’s approach to governance, characterized by what it termed “worthless rhetoric,” was a contributing factor to its poor performance in recent by-elections. The party suggested that the ADC’s focus on partisan politics rather than constructive engagement with national issues has hindered its effectiveness.
As the debate continues, both parties remain firm in their positions, reflecting the broader political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
