AS Roma manager José Mourinho has weighed in on Benfica’s triumph over Turkish giants Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League, explaining why the Portuguese side proved too strong and ultimately secured qualification at the expense of their opponents.

According to the Portuguese tactician, Benfica approached the tie with the right mindset, particularly in the away leg where they kept things tight and limited Fenerbahce’s scoring opportunities. “In the Champions League, the away leg is often where the battle is either won or lost,” Mourinho explained. “Benfica did not panic, they stayed compact, and they didn’t allow Fenerbahce to play their natural attacking game. That was the difference.”
Mourinho highlighted the effectiveness of Benfica’s midfield, which he said dominated key areas of the pitch, breaking up Fenerbahce’s rhythm and quickly transitioning into attack. He noted that while the Turkish side boasted individual talent and enjoyed passionate home support, they lacked the tactical balance needed to withstand Benfica’s structure.
The Roma coach also pointed out the role of European experience in such fixtures, saying that Benfica’s long history in continental competitions gave them an edge. “Clubs like Benfica know what it takes to survive difficult moments in Europe. They are tactically mature, and when they score, they know how to control a game. Fenerbahce still struggle with this level of composure,” Mourinho added.
He further praised Benfica’s defensive solidity, singling out the backline for staying calm under pressure and denying Fenerbahce the kind of space their forwards thrive on. Mourinho said that even though the Turkish side created a few chances, Benfica’s goalkeeper and defenders responded with resilience, making it difficult for the opposition to capitalize.
The result leaves Fenerbahce’s Champions League campaign in disappointment, with the club now having to redirect its focus toward domestic competition and a possible Europa League run. For Benfica, the victory not only boosts confidence but also serves as a statement of intent as they progress further in Europe.
Mourinho concluded by stating that knockout football is about fine margins, but Benfica’s preparation, composure, and tactical intelligence made the difference. “This wasn’t about luck; it was about quality, discipline, and knowing when to strike. Benfica had all of that. That is why they are still in the competition, and Fenerbahce are not.”
