Aminu Tambuwal, the senator representing Sokoto South and former governor of Sokoto State, has declared his political stance ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, affirming his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over incumbent President Bola Tinubu. Tambuwal also made it clear that he has no intention of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a candid interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tambuwal explained that his political decisions are guided by principles and Nigeria’s national interest rather than personal grudges or friendships. He emphasized that while he has respect for Tinubu and other political figures, he believes Atiku is better suited to lead the country toward progress.

“When it comes to the leadership of this country, even tomorrow, I would rather support Atiku than Tinubu,” Tambuwal stated. He described his political journey as one driven by ideological differences and policy priorities, recalling his previous switch from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC during the Jonathan administration due to policy disagreements, not personal animosity.

Tambuwal dismissed rumors or speculations that politicking is shaped by regional or ethnic biases. He pointed to the broad national coalition forming to challenge Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 elections, including leaders from various parts of Nigeria such as Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Addressing the APC, Tambuwal said he has no plans to join the ruling party, underlining fundamental differences in governance philosophy. Instead, he expressed commitment to work alongside opposition leaders to ensure a change of government “by the grace of God” through democratic means.

He also criticized Tinubu’s administration over perceived policy failures and lack of impactful leadership. “It is not cast in stone that Bola Tinubu may not lose in 2027,” Tambuwal noted, underscoring that efforts are underway to mount a formidable opposition that can offer Nigerians a better alternative.

Tambuwal’s remarks reflect the growing political shifts and realignments as the 2027 elections approach. His endorsement of Atiku Abubakar over both Tinubu and other potential contenders signals important strategic moves within Nigeria’s complex political landscape.
