Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the former Labour Party candidate for the Lagos State governorship election in 2023, has firmly stated that he will never align with President Bola Tinubu to contest for the Lagos governorship seat in the 2027 elections. In a recent interview, Rhodes-Vivour reiterated his commitment to an opposition coalition that offers a genuine alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.

Rhodes-Vivour, who recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made it clear that his political ambitions and values are fundamentally at odds with aligning with Tinubu, despite Tinubu’s strong influence in Lagos politics as a former governor of the state and current president of Nigeria.

He expressed that any collaboration with Tinubu would contradict his principles and the purpose of his political journey, which centers on reform and inclusive governance. Rhodes-Vivour stated that his decision to join the ADC was motivated by the need to build a united opposition front to challenge the APC’s dominance in Nigeria.

The former Labour Party candidate also emphasized his vision for Lagos as a state that should be governed with transparency, accountability, and a focus on the welfare of all residents, a sharp contrast to what he perceives as the current administration’s approach.

This declaration comes at a time when Lagos politics is expected to witness intense competition, with several parties gearing up for the critical 2027 election cycle. Rhodes-Vivour’s refusal to align with Tinubu underscores the growing polarization and strategic maneuvering among opposition figures who seek to present credible alternatives to the APC.

Political analysts suggest that Rhodes-Vivour’s stance could signal a broader challenge for Tinubu in retaining influence in his home state, as new alliances and coalitions emerge in the lead-up to the elections.
