Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Bright Chimezie has raised concerns over the direction of contemporary music, particularly criticizing the younger generation of artists for lacking meaningful lyrical content. Speaking on the CreativTea podcast in early September 2025, Chimezie praised the modern musicians’ ability to craft great rhythms and beats but lamented that their lyrics often fall short in delivering lasting messages to listeners.
Chimezie, renowned for pioneering the Zigima sound—a fusion of traditional Igbo music, highlife, and socially conscious lyrics—emphasized the importance of music as a vessel for cultural, social, and political commentary. Reflecting on his 1984 hit “Respect Africa,” he noted that the song’s enduring legacy is rooted in its meaningful message, which continues to resonate with audiences nearly four decades later.
“Music today is more profitable than in my era, but my worry is about the lyrical content,” Chimezie explained. “What message are these young artists passing to society? When their music lasts 40 years, will they be proud to share it with their children?”
Chimezie encouraged contemporary artists to prioritize crafting songs with powerful, reflective lyrics that can challenge and inspire society. He believes that music should not only entertain but also educate and provoke thought, helping to preserve cultural identity and promote positive values.
