Political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Timi Frank, has issued a stark warning that Nigeria could face unrest similar to the recent upheaval in Nepal if the 2027 general elections are not conducted credibly. Speaking in Abuja on September 14, 2025, Frank urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement urgent reforms ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

Frank emphasized the need for ethical leadership within electoral and security institutions, cautioning that continued biases and electoral manipulation could plunge Nigeria into serious political instability, potentially more severe than the 2020 #EndSARS protests and Nepal’s recent unrest.

He called on the international community, including former US President Donald Trump, to pressure Nigeria’s government, INEC, and the National Assembly to prioritize electoral reforms. Frank specifically advocated for the appointment of a new INEC chairman with proven integrity, as the current chairman’s tenure is about to expire.

Highlighting security agencies’ pivotal role, he demanded impartiality to protect voters and prevent political violence, rejecting their past roles in election rigging. Frank also urged the judiciary to maintain neutrality and deliver justice without fear or favor, warning of accountability for compromised officials.

He praised INEC’s recent recognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership as a positive step towards electoral inclusiveness and reiterated the importance of citizens actively participating in the voting process and defending their choices to safeguard democracy.

“If Nigeria fails to act with neutrality and integrity in electoral processes, it risks chaos and instability worse than Nepal’s unrest, compounded by poverty and political oppression,” Frank concluded.
