Nigerian reality television star and media personality, Natacha Akide, widely known as Tacha, has publicly criticized content creators for their continuous and, what she describes as, “hypocritical” condemnation of Lagos State’s infrastructure. Her remarks came in response to a viral video circulating online that depicted a poor drainage system in a highbrow area of Lagos.
Tacha took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “All these content creators! Everyday Lagos state Lagos state! One will think ‘Lagos state’ is the only state in Nigeria. Oyah post ‘highbrow’ area in your own state and you’ll be nowhere to be found.. doubt you even know who your local govt chairman is.. sighs.” She challenged these creators to highlight positive aspects or affluent areas in their home states, suggesting a biased focus solely on Lagos.
This intervention by Tacha follows recent controversies sparked by figures like ex-NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye (Raye), influencer Scott Iguma, and comedian Acapella, who controversially claimed that Lagos “smells.” These comments have drawn widespread reactions and debate across Nigerian social media.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, has previously dismissed such allegations, accusing some individuals of deliberately attempting to tarnish the state’s image.
Tacha’s stance emphasizes a growing sentiment among some public figures that while constructive criticism is necessary, an incessant focus on Lagos’s shortcomings, while overlooking similar issues elsewhere or advancements within the state, can be unfair and misleading. Her statement has ignited further discussion on the role of content creators in shaping public perception and the dynamics of state development across Nigeria.
