Agboola Ajayi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State election, has formally withdrawn his Supreme Court appeal challenging the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ajayi, who also served as Deputy Governor under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, had contested the election results after securing 117,845 votes against Aiyedatiwa’s 366,781.

In a letter dated September 16, 2025, addressed to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Ajayi explained that following extensive consultations with family, party members, associates, and legal advisors, a consensus was reached to discontinue the legal contest. The letter emphasized Ajayi’s commitment to good governance and peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Ajayi extended his heartfelt wishes to Governor Aiyedatiwa, pledging support for the state leadership and continued dedication to the development of Ondo State and the nation. This withdrawal marks the conclusion of the legal dispute over the last gubernatorial election, signaling a move towards political stability in the state.

Justice has been previously sought through the Election Petition Tribunal and Court of Appeal, both of which dismissed Ajayi’s petitions. The Supreme Court appeal was the final legal recourse pursued before this decision to withdraw.

The development has brought relief to the political landscape in Ondo and allows Governor Aiyedatiwa to govern without the cloud of ongoing litigation.
