Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to exercise caution as he considers calls to contest the 2027 presidential election. Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, Kukah lauded Jonathan’s 2015 concession as a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy, describing it as an act of sacrifice and honor.
Bishop Kukah noted that Jonathan had the power and resources to resist the outcome of the election but chose peace instead, restoring faith in democratic governance. However, he cautioned Jonathan to be wary of those who might want to use him as a tool to further their own interests, rather than the nation’s.
Quoting former Defence Minister General Theophilus Danjuma, Kukah said, “The voice of the devil is not so far from the voice of God. Listen carefully to those who want to use you as an instrument for the elongation of their interests, and not your interests or the interests of Nigeria.”
Kukah urged Jonathan to reflect deeply, pray, and make a decision guided by conscience and national interest. He also commended Jonathan for his leadership qualities and called on him to weigh carefully the implications of a political comeback for the country’s stability and democratic progress.
As the 2027 elections approach, the Nigerian political landscape remains charged with speculation about Jonathan’s potential return, but Bishop Kukah’s advice emphasizes prudence and discernment in navigating these possibilities.
