The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially published the final list of 17 candidates vying for various positions in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections. The announcement marks a crucial milestone as the electoral body prepares for one of Nigeria’s key local government polls.

The elections are scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, across all polling units within the FCT, including its six Area Councils. The voters registered in the area are reminded to vote only at their designated polling units using their valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVC). The commission reaffirmed the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to ensure a credible and transparent voting process.

These elections are expected to be highly competitive with various political parties fielding candidates determined to secure leadership roles at the local government level. INEC’s release of the final candidate list allows voters to familiarize themselves with who will be contesting the positions of chairmen, vice-chairmen, and councillors in the FCT’s Area Councils.

INEC continues to call on residents in the Federal Capital Territory to actively participate in the electoral process and to uphold the democratic values of Nigeria. The commission reiterated that only voters with valid PVCs will be permitted to cast their votes on election day.

The final publication of candidates is a critical step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democracy from the grassroots and ensure local governance reflects the will of the people in the nation’s capital.
