Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has provided insight into his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting the importance of alignment with the federal government and transparent governance. Speaking publicly, Eno said, “I can’t support Tinubu in the dark,” reflecting his need for open communication and collaboration with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The governor disclosed that his move was preceded by extensive consultations with political stakeholders across Akwa Ibom State, aiming for consensus and clarity before making the significant party switch. Eno emphasized that his decision was strategic, focused on leveraging the APC platform to better address infrastructural development and federal projects such as the Ibom Deep Seaport, which stands to boost the state’s economy.
Eno addressed concerns of political discord by affirming no personal ill feelings towards his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, who remains in the PDP. The defection has triggered a wave of similar moves from lawmakers and political figures within the state, signaling a gradual shift in political allegiances after decades of PDP dominance.
Further, Governor Eno framed his defection not as weakness but as a realignment with the evolving political realities to effectively serve his constituents and enhance Akwa Ibom’s growth. His move underscores the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s political landscape leading up to the 2027 general elections.
